Roadworks on Carmanhall Road commencing Monday 10th October for 6/7 weeks

Modifications to the road layout proposed by DLR Traffic Section

The Public Realm associated with the Beacon Quarter South Development alongside Blackthorn Drive was finished last year.  This work included new Public Lighting, new roadway, new cycle tracks, new footpaths as well as additional drainage and underground utility services.

Following  the completion of these works, the new road section alongside Blackthorn Drive and the extension of Carmanhall Road to the junction with Blackthorn Drive was ‘Taken-in-Charge’ by Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council.

DLR Traffic Section consider that the new section of Carmanhall Road is not designed to fully reflect the type and level of usage it currently experiences.

Therefore it is proposed to undertake the following modifications to the road layout:-

  • Reduce the size and extent of the existing concrete island in the middle of the roadway, in order to re-align the outbound traffic lane.
  • Bring the existing Signalised Pedestrian Crossing into operation, after first completing civil and electrical works.
  • Installing a new footpath between the access to the Shopping Centre car park and the junction with Blackthorn Drive.
  • Constructing footpath build-outs on either side of the Shopping Centre car park entrance, to improve safety and visibility.
  • Re-alignment of the existing cycle tracks, with the left turning filter lane becoming a shared traffic / cycle lane.
  • General modifications to the existing road markings to provide clarity and assist traffic flows.

Enclosed is drawing ref. TT-016-05-2016, showing the proposed new road layout.  These proposals are designed to improve road safety, while providing for better pedestrian and cycle safety.

Richard Nolan Civil Engineering Ltd. Have been appointed to construct the scheme.  They will start on site on Monday 10th October 2016 and will be on site for a period of six to seven weeks.  Every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum during this time.
