Over 500 people got their first glimpse of Dublin’s newest park as Fernhill Park and Gardens in Stepaside opened for a few hours on New Year’s Eve.

Bought by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council two years ago at a cost of €4.25m , Fernhill has been redeveloped for the local community.

It was a former family residence with 34 hectares of gardens, parkland, woodland and agricultural land in an elevated location overlooking Dublin Bay.

The estate dates back to around 1723 and the family residence on the land is believed to have been built in the 1860s.

In September 2017, the council agreed a plan to develop the estate into a regional park. The first tracks and trails have been completed and the public were invited to visit the park on New Year’s Eve for the first of several planned partial openings that will occur as works proceed.

There'll be more parts of the gardens opened as the redevelopment continues over the next two years
