Sandyford apartment projects get green light despite planning objections

A major apartment project in Sandyford has been cleared for development by An Bord Pleanála, despite a 145-page report on behalf of a local residents group claiming it would be ”too tall” for the area.

The sites known as ‘Glenina’ and ‘Karuna’, near the Sandyford Road will consist of homes in four apartment blocks ranging in height up to six stories.

When granting planning permission for the Strategic Housing Development, the appeals board has reduced the number of apartments from 137 to 116 “in the interests of residential and visual amenities”.

The initial plan was made up of four apartment blocks with two rising to six storeys in height. The appeals board ordered that the two six-storey apartment blocks each be reduced by one storey.

Local objections said “the height, scale, massing and density of development are out of character with this sensitive transitional location, which is currently primarily characterised by two-storey residential development”.

An Bord Pleanála said the “nature and scale” of the project is “consistent” with local planning guidelines.
