Retail Excellence urges Black Friday shoppers to search for Irish retailers online

Warning that Irish retailers lose out to international giants when it comes to online shopping

Retail Excellence, the largest representative body for the retail industry in Ireland, has called on the public to support Irish businesses in the upcoming ‘Black Friday’ sales (Friday, November 27th). It said that widespread public support would ensure this day could become known as ‘Green Friday’. Retail Excellence member companies employ 280,000 staff across a range of sectors.

It said that a ‘Green Friday’ initiative would have a positive impact on businesses around the country who were struggling after the worst year for retail on record.

Speaking today, Duncan Graham, Managing Director of Retail Excellence, said: “Black Friday has generated a lot of momentum in Ireland in recent years, and this year we are calling on Irish people to support Irish businesses so we can make this a ‘Green Friday’ for retailers that need our support. Many retailers have had to shut for a third of the year which has been devastating for business.

“Before the virus emerged, we estimate that up to 70% of online sales in Ireland were with non-Irish businesses. It’s time for us all to support local businesses so that the retail industry can look forward to 2021 with some degree of confidence.”

He also called on the Government to support the ‘Green Friday’ initiative. “The Government needs to help the retail industry by funding a promotional drive to buy local. This will have an effect for both Green Friday and for Christmas. Retailers are fighting for their very existence at present and need a helping hand.”
