Launch of ‘Resource Efficiency Guide’ to help business save money and the environment

New guidelines to help businesses reduce their costs and environmental footprint have been launched by Green Business in conjunction with the Environmental Protection Agency.

The ‘Resource Efficiency Guide’, which was officially launched in Dundrum Town Centre this week, provides retailers with the invaluable information, guidance and tips they need to save tens of thousands of euro each year.

The Guide is aimed at all retailers whether they are part of large shopping centres or stand alone shops and is an important resource to help businesses dramatically reduce their energy, water and waste bills.

According to Margaret Coles, Green Business Officer with Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council “Now more than ever no one can afford to literally see money go down the drain and the Resource Efficiency Guide shows how significant savings can be achieved. For example the Guide profiles how repairing water leaks and upgrading water infrastructure reduced water usage by 40% in Stillorgan Village Centre giving savings of €24,000 per annum.”

In September 2011 Dundrum Town Centre received the county’s first Ecocert Award and at today’s launch Don Nugent, Centre Manager said, “Dundrum Town Centre endeavours in every way to be the best in class in all aspects of our business and we are very focused on implementing our environmental policy which is reviewed and updated regularly.”

Shane Colgan, Environmental Protection Agency welcomed the Guide, which gave retailers the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to Ireland’s environmental sustainability. “As Irish retail continues to struggle against the effects of declining sales and rising business costs, dedicated guidelines demonstrating how the retail industry can achieve significant savings by maximising the efficiency and sustainability of resources has never been so timely,” he said.
