Al Qaeda reportedly demands 10 million euros to free hostages

ALGIERS (Reuters) - Al Qaeda's North African wing is demanding 10 million euros (8.9 million pounds) in exchange for a Briton and a Swiss national being held hostage in the Sahara, an Algerian newspaper reported on Saturday.

The group had previously threatened to kill the British hostage by May 15 if Britain did not release a Jordanian Islamist it was holding.

El Khabar daily said Al Qaeda was also demanding a two-month truce. Britain has asked the group to show that the two hostages are alive and well, the paper cited a security source as saying.
