EDF appoints bank for British grid sale

LONDON (Reuters) - French utility EDF <EDF.PA> has appointed Deutsche Bank to help it prepare for a possible sale of its British power grid as part of plans to reduce debt, the Sunday Times reported, without citing sources.

The grid, which is estimated to be worth about 3 billion pounds, is the largest in Britain and transmits power to almost 8 million homes and businesses.

A sale would allow EDF to reduce the debt taken on after its purchases of Britain's nuclear operator British Energy and half of Constellation Energy's <CEG.N> nuclear business.

EDF declined to comment on the Sunday Times report, but reiterated it was reviewing a range of options to reduce debt.

"EDF has commenced a review of possible asset disposals aimed at reducing net financial debt by at least 5 billion euros ($6.8 billion)" the company said in a statement.

"No decisions have been made yet," it added.
