South Korean Bae glad to have traded baseball for birdies

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's Bae Sang-moon celebrated his third win on the Asian Tour at the weekend, reinforcing his status as one of Asia's rising talents and vindicating his decision to choose golf ahead of baseball.

The 22-year-old pocketed more than $93,000 (61,300 pounds) for winning the GS Caltex Maekyung Open near Seoul, more than many professional baseball players make in South Korea in an entire season.

Bae, who often employed his mother as his caddie, put down his baseball glove and picked up golf clubs on the advice of his parents.

"When I was young, I enjoyed playing baseball and wanted to make it my career," the Asian Tour quoted Bae as saying in a news release Monday.

"My parents advised me that baseball wasn't as good a career as golf and I listened to them. I'm glad I did."

Bae, who's victories have all come on Korean soil, moved up to eighth place in the Asian Tour's Order of Merit with the victory.
